Abandoned

I am drawn to photographing the abandoned and neglected structures in the towns and villages of Northern New Mexico. Many are the original adobe houses, while others are modern stucco imitations of that ancient building material and, more recently trailers. For centuries in Northern New Mexico the Native Americans, Spanish, and the first Anglos built with adobe made with mud bricks from the local clay soil mixed with straw. The adobe walls, constantly eroded by weather, required seasonal maintenance. The adobe structures become neglected without the community and the skills to maintain them.  Requiring less maintenance, trailers proliferate along with traditional style houses built using frame construction and the modern adobe-look materials.
